As Ramadan approaches, many ask: Does performing Umrah during Ramadan equal the reward of Hajj?
Dar Al-Ifta Al-Misriyyah confirmed that Umrah in Ramadan equals Hajj in reward, based on authentic prophetic traditions, but it does not replace the obligatory Hajj.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Umrah in Ramadan equals Hajj,” and in another narration, “equals Hajj with me.”
What Does “Equal” Mean?
The equality refers strictly to the magnitude of reward, not the type of act or its legal ruling.
Hajj remains a distinct pillar of Islam with specific rites such as standing at Arafah and stoning the pillars—rituals not included in Umrah.
Therefore, performing Umrah in Ramadan brings immense spiritual reward, yet it does not fulfill the duty of Hajj for those who are able.
Is the Reward Greater Than Other Months?
Yes, due to the virtue of Ramadan and the sanctity of Makkah, rewards are multiplied. However, scholars clarify that this multiplication concerns reward, not exemption from obligations.
Umrah remains a highly recommended act of worship, while Hajj is a mandatory pillar once in a lifetime for those capable.
