Qiyam al-Layl (night prayer) is among the greatest acts of worship, bringing tranquility and immense reward. The Prophet ﷺ consistently practiced it, selecting prayers that combine the good of this world and the Hereafter.

What the Prophet ﷺ said about Qiyam al-Layl:

“Allah smiles at a servant who rises on a cold night from his bed, performs ablution, and prays. Allah says to His angels: What drove My servant to do this? They reply: His hope in You and fear from what You hold. Allah says: I have granted him what he hoped and secured him from what he feared.”

Virtues of Qiyam al-Layl:

  1. Prophet ﷺ would stand so long that his feet cracked.

  2. Leads to Paradise and elevates ranks therein.

  3. Those who preserve it are deserving of Allah’s mercy.

  4. Best of voluntary prayers after obligatory ones, expiates sins.

  5. Strengthens faith, devotion, and love for Allah.

  6. Increases alertness, clarity, and guides toward righteous deeds.

  7. Health benefits: moderate night worship improves pain relief and focus.

Best times to pray:

  • From Isha until Fajr, especially the last third of the night.

  • Prophet ﷺ divided his night between sleep, Qiyam, and Witr, emulating the pattern of Prophet Dawud (AS).

How to perform Qiyam al-Layl:

  1. Prayer: Begin with two light rak‘ahs, continue two by two, end with Witr.

  2. Dhikr and Quran recitation: Recitation of Quran and remembrance also counts as Qiyam.

Legal ruling:

  • For Muslims generally: a confirmed Sunnah.

  • For the Prophet ﷺ: a voluntary night prayer (not obligatory), bringing immense reward and expiating sins.

Qiyam al-Layl is a path to spiritual elevation, tranquility, and closeness to Allah, especially during the blessed month of Ramadan.
