Istikhara prayer is a spiritual means through which a believer seeks clarity and peace when faced with decisions. It represents complete reliance on Allah, entrusting Him to choose what is best for one’s faith and worldly life.

A Muslim is encouraged to perform Istikhara when considering permissible matters such as marriage, travel, or work, following the guidance taught by Prophet Muhammad, who instructed his companions on how to seek divine guidance in their affairs.

Steps of performing Istikhara properly:

It begins with ablution and sincere intention, followed by performing two non-obligatory rak‘ahs. In the first rak‘ah, one recites Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah Al-Kafirun, and in the second rak‘ah, Al-Fatiha and Surah Al-Ikhlas.

After completing the prayer, the person raises their hands and recites the Istikhara supplication, mentioning their specific need and fully entrusting the matter to Allah, asking Him to guide them toward what is best.

There is no requirement for dreams or specific signs; rather, the outcome is reflected in inner peace, ease of matters, or obstacles being removed. A tranquil heart is often the clearest indication of guidance.

Istikhara may be repeated multiple times until the heart feels settled. It is also permissible to recite the supplication without performing prayer in situations where prayer is not possible, such as for a woman during menstruation.
