Can You Read Istikhara Dua from a Phone? Islamic Ruling Explained
Many Muslims wonder whether it is permissible to read the Istikhara supplication from a mobile phone instead of memorizing it, especially when seeking guidance in important life decisions.
When facing important decisions such as marriage, career choices, or travel plans, many Muslims turn to Salat al-Istikhara, seeking guidance from God. A common question today is whether it is permissible to read the Istikhara supplication from a mobile phone.
Islamic scholars explain that reading the Istikhara dua from a phone or a written paper is permissible, especially for those who have not memorized the supplication. The main objective of Istikhara is sincerely asking God to guide a person to what is best.
Traditionally, Istikhara is performed by praying two voluntary units of prayer (rak‘ahs) and then reciting the Istikhara supplication after completing the prayer. Reciting the dua after the prayer is considered the practice closest to the prophetic tradition.
However, if someone needs to read the supplication from a phone during voluntary prayer because they have not memorized it, scholars state that this is allowed when necessary, since the phone simply serves as a reading aid.
In situations where a person cannot perform the prayer—such as a woman during menstruation or someone physically unable to pray—it is still permissible to recite the Istikhara supplication alone, asking God for guidance.
In general, reading supplications or remembrances from a phone or digital device does not affect the validity or acceptance of the prayer or dua, as sincerity and presence of heart remain the most important aspects.
