Azhar Fatwa Clarifies Sacrifice Conditions.. Islamic Age Requirements for Udhiyah Explained
Conditions of Udhiyah in Islam According to Al-Azhar Fatwa
The Azhar Global Center for Electronic Fatwa confirmed that one of the essential conditions for a valid Udhiyah (Islamic sacrifice) is that the animal must reach the prescribed age according to Islamic law, as each type of livestock has a specific minimum age requirement that ensures the sacrifice is valid and accepted.
Islamic Age Requirements for Sacrifice Animals
Al-Azhar clarified the required ages for different types of sacrificial animals as follows:
- Sheep (lamb): at least 6 months old
- Goats: at least 1 year old
- Cattle (cows and buffaloes): at least 2 years old
- Camels: at least 5 years old
This applies equally to both males and females, as long as the condition of age is fulfilled.
Religious Evidence for Age Requirement
The ruling is based on the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: “Do not slaughter except an adult animal, unless it is difficult for you, then you may slaughter a young sheep.” This hadith highlights the importance of meeting the required age, while allowing a concession for certain cases.
Fattened Animals and Age Exception
Al-Azhar also explained that fattened livestock may be accepted even if they have not fully reached the age requirement, provided they achieve the intended quality and meat quantity, such as a cow reaching around 350 kg or more before completing two years.
Wisdom Behind Age Requirement
The age requirement ensures that the sacrifice is complete, healthy, and suitable, reflecting the meaning of offering the best to Allah in worship and devotion.
