As Ramadan begins, many seek to understand what breaks the fast and what does not to ensure correct fasting. The Egyptian Fatwa Authority confirmed that fasting is invalidated by intentionally introducing food, drink, or equivalent substances into the body through open passages: mouth, nose, or the openings of private parts.

The main actions that break the fast include:

  • Intentional vomiting.

  • Eating or drinking after dawn deliberately.

  • Menstrual or postpartum bleeding.

  • Smoking.

Meanwhile, actions that do not break the fast include:

  • Rinsing the mouth or washing the face and bathing due to heat without water reaching the throat intentionally.

  • Undergoing X-rays or medical examinations.

  • Using contact lenses, eye drops, hair oils, and medical patches.

  • Fasting while in a state of ritual impurity or after blood donation.

  • Sleeping during the day, using kohl in the eyes, or swimming without swallowing water intentionally.

Understanding these rules helps the fasting person perform worship correctly and avoid common mistakes, while maintaining intention and awareness is crucial for completing the fast properly.
