During winter, cold temperatures can cause swelling, redness, and pain in fingers and toes, a condition known as chilblains or frostbite-like inflammation. This occurs when skin is exposed to prolonged cold, especially in damp climates, leading to discomfort that can range from mild itching to sharp burning sensations.

Why Cold Affects the Skin

Cold air and wind cause tiny blood vessels near the skin’s surface to constrict, preserving heat for vital organs. Rapid rewarming can make the vessels expand too quickly, causing fluid to leak into surrounding tissues, resulting in redness, swelling, itching, and burning pain.

People who are thin, smokers, or have circulation problems such as Raynaud’s disease, diabetes, or anemia are more prone to this condition. Tight shoes, wet socks, and poorly heated homes worsen symptoms.

Signs of Winter Chilblains

  • Red or purplish patches appearing 12–24 hours after cold exposure.

  • Intense itching and tingling sensations under the skin.

  • Swollen fingers and toes resembling sausages, sometimes with blisters or cracks.

  • Toes are most affected, followed by fingers; occasionally nose, cheeks, or ears.

  • Numbness may precede pain, lasting 1–3 weeks.

Treatment and Prevention

  1. Gradual Warming: Wear multiple layers of wool or breathable fabric indoors.

  2. Warm Water Soak: Use warm, not hot water, dry gently, and apply fragrance-free moisturizer or petroleum jelly.

  3. Pain Relief: Ibuprofen can reduce pain and inflammation.

  4. Medicated Creams: Reduce itching and swelling.

  5. Elevate Affected Areas: Keep them dry and avoid scratching.

  6. Quit Smoking: Improves blood flow and opens blood vessels.

  7. Warm Clothing: Insulated shoes, gloves, and socks provide extra protection outdoors.

Most cases resolve within weeks. Seek medical attention if pus develops, temperature rises, or wounds fail to heal.
