In a new alert raising concerns about over-the-counter medications, UK health organizations have warned about the potential dangers of one of the most commonly used painkillers worldwide.

The warning focuses on ibuprofen, a widely available drug often used to relieve pain and inflammation without a prescription, making it a go-to option for many people.

Experts caution that frequent or improper use of ibuprofen may gradually impair kidney function and, in severe cases, lead to complete kidney damage, particularly among individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Those most at risk include people with diabetes or high blood pressure, as their kidneys are more vulnerable to damage from such medications.

The warning also extends to a broader class of drugs known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including ibuprofen, naproxen, and diclofenac, which may increase blood pressure and harm blood vessels in the kidneys.

Healthcare professionals stress the importance of using these medications responsibly—following recommended dosages and avoiding prolonged use without medical advice. Monitoring for unusual symptoms is also essential to prevent complications.
