As dietary supplements become increasingly popular, nutrition expert Josie Porter has clarified that they are not a substitute for a healthy diet, despite common misconceptions.

She explained that natural foods remain the best source of nutrients, as they provide a complete and balanced mix of vitamins and minerals that supplements cannot fully replicate. She also noted that most people do not need supplements if they follow a well-balanced diet.

Porter highlighted that the supplement industry sometimes lacks strict regulation, since these products are marketed as food rather than medicine. This allows them to be sold without rigorous testing, which may result in products that do not contain the exact amounts listed on their labels.

When evaluating popular supplements, she stated that collagen offers limited benefits for skin health and cannot match the effects of proper skincare, hydration, and healthy habits.

Creatine, however, was described as an effective supplement, particularly for those engaged in high-intensity workouts, as it can improve performance and increase strength, though it does not replace proper nutrition.

Regarding ashwagandha, she explained that it may help reduce stress in some cases, but it is not a complete solution, as lifestyle improvements and quality sleep remain essential.

Omega-3 was among the few supplements she recommended, especially for individuals who do not get enough through their diet, due to its benefits for heart and brain health and its anti-inflammatory properties.

She concluded by emphasizing that supplements are not a magic solution, and that true health starts with a balanced diet, good sleep, and a healthy lifestyle.
