Interest in the potential risks of pomegranate has grown alongside its popularity as a winter fruit, as many people seek to balance its well-known health benefits with possible side effects. Pomegranate is rich in antioxidants that support heart health, lower blood pressure, and help regulate blood sugar levels, yet excessive daily intake may lead to unexpected harm.

Medical studies show that pomegranate contains high levels of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and bioactive compounds, along with essential minerals such as potassium and magnesium. While generally safe for most individuals, some people may experience allergic reactions, including skin itching, swelling, nasal congestion, or breathing difficulties.

Overconsumption may also cause digestive disturbances such as diarrhea and stomach discomfort. Additionally, the peel and non-edible parts of the fruit contain harmful substances, making thorough cleaning and proper preparation essential.

The most serious risks arise from pomegranate’s interaction with certain medications. It may dangerously increase the absorption of cholesterol-lowering drugs such as atorvastatin and simvastatin, potentially leading to muscle breakdown and kidney failure. Pomegranate may also interact with heart rhythm medications, blood thinners, blood pressure drugs, immunosuppressants, and other treatments.

For individuals with low blood pressure, excessive intake may cause significant drops in blood pressure levels. Doctors also advise stopping pomegranate consumption at least two weeks before undergoing surgery.

Although pomegranate supports digestive health, its high fiber content can worsen symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome when consumed in large amounts, causing nausea, abdominal pain, and bowel irregularities. Moderation remains the key to benefiting safely from this fruit.
